Josh Bongard (2002):

Josh Bongard is a researcher at the Atrificial Intelligence Lab at the University of Zurich and he is dealing with artificial Evolution. He is specialised in designing creatures that evolve their morphology in their virtual environment. It is of interest to see how many limbs, what genome lengths - he alows uneven crossover - and with what controller a creature evolves for its specific task.

The picture shows one of his evolved creatures, the blockpusher:

Josh Bongard wrote several interesting papers, the one below is very interesting according to our work:

Evolving Modular Genetic Regulatory Networks (PDF)
Abstract — In this paper we introduce a system that combines ontogenetic development and artificial evolution to automatically design robots in a physics-based, virtual environment. Through lesion experiments on the evolved agents, we demonstrate that the evolved genetic regulatory networks from successful evolutionary runs are more modular than those obtained from unsuccessful runs.
